1. The Dream
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
This song was born following a conversation with Julie about the role of music in our lives. The lyrics speak metaphorically of our dream, likening it to sailing on the ocean. At times our dream is obscured and abandoned, and at other times it is a clear destination. We still sail along with our dream, never knowing exactly where it will lead us..

Catch a ride upon the wind
Strong enough to fill these sails
Set a course for open seas
Far away from winter gales
Find a star to light the way
Welcome on this midnight run
Guide us safely through the night
Lead us to the morning sun

REFRAIN:
Then it’s over, it’s over
It’s just a dream we’re drifting in
Though time may bring it back again
The sea is calm without the wind
That whispers a goodbye,
for now, it’s gone.

As a gust will turn you hard
Take the slack and lend a hand
Hold a fast and steady line
When there is no sight of land
Find you’re heading in a squall
Keep her on an even keel
Face a light along the shore
Destination is revealed.

 2. Timber Wolf
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
Written for friends that faced the possibility of losing their child who was in a coma following an automobile accident. The Lord was kind to them, she is well.

Hunting in the darkened forest, youngsters scout ahead
Learning as they run before us, instinctively they're lead
I call them back as night is falling, from the wood they run
Making our their silhouettes, spotting all but one.

REFRAIN:
"You my child are hiding very well
Far beyond the mountain cave you dwell
If a prayer could break the Master's spell
I surely hope a timber wolf can tell."

And just like that I realized that you were gone
And wondered if you're ever coming back
I've been searching for you far into the sawn
And wonder if you're running with the pack.

Waiting in the cold dark forest, youngsters in their den.
All but one sleeping soundly, she is on the run.
I can hear her in the evenings calling to the wind
I will keep a midnight watch 'till she's safely in.

REFRAIN
And just like that I heard you howling at the moon
And wonder, if you needed to be free
I cry aloud and hope that you will hear me soon
And wonder if you're coming back to me.

3. Angeline
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
A fictional tale of an abusive marriage, where Angeline gets her revenge and finds peace.

At the age of sixteen Angeline took a lover,
Her youth and her innocense were taken for good.
And soon they were wed at the steps of St. Edward's
though somehow she wasn't convinced that they should.

A bottle of rye waited on the oak table
along with the Bible that witnessed their vows,
When the bottle was empty it quickly uncovered
the stranger she takes to the bed with her now.

REFRAIN:
They got their won place on the shore of New England
where the slats of the shutters had long blown away
In their own place a secret is hidden
as the salty, green ocean continues to spray.

The first time he lay in the streets of New England
she lifted him up and she made him to stand,
but he staggered away and he left her in silence
soon after he showed her the back of his hand.

Now, time passes slow in the shadow of anger
and it's a hard life to live when you cannot go home.
"But dinner is late and I must take to leavin',"
says she, "and it's better than being alone."

Ten years in the grip of a misguided lover
finally ended the day that she covered his grave.
With roses and thorns in a plot at St. Edward's
she prayed in the rain for her soul to be saved.

Now she sits on the shore of her home in New England
and thinks as the waves slap the rocks on the shore.
The bottle of rye that she poured in the ocean
has long disappeared and can't hurt her no more.

She's got her own place on the shores of New England
where the slats of the shutters have long blown away.
In her own place her secret is hidden
as the salty, green ocean continues to spray
In her own place on the shores of New England
the slats of the shutters were repaired yesterday
In her own place her secret's well hidden
as the salty, green ocean continues to spray.

4. Civil Defense Drill
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
True account of a childhood terror that many of us experienced during the 1950's and 60's.

I'm glad I went to Catholic school in 1965
The most important subject then was how to stay alive
'Cause when we least expected it the sirens gave a shrill
that shook us to attention….was it real or just a drill?

The nuns became our leaders, they demanded calm
We had to form a single line as we await the bomb
File out the doorway, scared to say the least
To meet up with the general who sounds just like our priest.

REFRAIN:

"Ooh wee! Look at me", sister Mary begs
"I want to see you squatting
with your head between your legs".
"Oh no! Here we go", I heard the general cry, "You'd
better pass the word along or we're all gonna die".

We march across the playground to the church next door
Led into a basement more frightening than war
Candles lit the crawl space, heads were kept real low
Radioactive symbols gave off an eerie glow

And down the ranks the orders came to bow and say a prayer
My buddy's lost, so I search, but couldn't find him there
Stumbled on a chalice, an artifact of old
And realized in the spoils of war that I discovered gold.

We try hard not to panic or show them any sweat
But, truth be known, some uniforms started getting wet.
I've done my part, and do believe I've fooled the enemy
Huddled in the cobwebs with a church on top of me.

I'm glad I went to Catholic school in 1965
The most important subject then was how to stay alive
I must admit, that education tends to haunt me still
But if they drop the bomb today…I sadly know the drill.

REFRAIN:

"Ooh wee! Look at me", sister Mary begs
"I want to see you squatting
with your head between your legs".
"Oh no! Here we go", I heard the general cry, "You'd
better pass the word along or we're all gonna die".

Ooh wee! Can't you see that Sister Mary's cool
But if we all get vaporized she'll keep us after school
"Oh no! Here we go!", I heard the general yell,
"You'd better pass the word along-
maybe God will keep us strong-
Let us pray that we don't all get blown… to Holy hell!".

5. The Journal
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
This story was written for the Times Hearld Record by our friend Chris Farlekas, about two yound lovers and the journal they kept before Josh died of cancer. (Thanks Chris).

Dear Josh, I hope you see that my words can only be from now until the final page I write for thee.
Dear Yvonne, you must believe that our love is meant to be from now until the end of time
for that's how long you will be with me.

And from my window the stars all seem
to drop beneath the corner of your eye.
And since I found you in my dream
the birds learned the chorus of my sweet lullaby.
And as I leave you I'll take along
the final song I heard you sing.
I know this journal won't steer us wrong
you said, "Love laughs at locksmiths," now the day's unraveling.

Dear Yvonne, (Dear Josh), You must believe... ( I believe)
That our love is meant to be from now until the end of time for that's how long
you will be with me.

6. The Ballad of Clancy McGee
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
Clancy, a practical joker, always gets the best of his bar buddy.

Clancy McGee made a fool out of me
late one night in the pub that he goes.
For he won a bet that I'd rather forget,
then stood whistling "My Wild Irish Rose."
He was whistling "My Wild Irish Rose."

Now Clancy was frail with a taste fo the ale
and our paychecks were waged on the floor.
But as six mugs went down in ten seconds I found
that Clancy had finished two more.
He was whistling as he finished two more.

REFRAIN:
We were pretty good pals with an eye for the gals
and I got one to walk me back home.
But somehow I knew that McGee liked her too,
and just hoped that he's leave her alone.
No, I prayed that he'd leave her alone.

As we walked in the door I listened and swore
I heard whistling up in the bath.
Now McGee's broken in from the pub where he's been
getting ready to move on me lass.
Cleaned and shaved just to move on me lass.

So I ran to the tub as he asked for a rub
thinking I was sweet Molly instead.
In a bit of bad luck, he intended to duck
when my fist caught the side of his head.
Yes, I pounded the side of his head.

Oh! I killed him, you see, but for Molly and me
self defense fit the scene of the crime.
Ana although I was brave I was mocked at the grave
by Clancy McGee one more time.
I was mocked by McGee one more time.
See, Clancy McGee made a fool out of me
as Molly and I stood and froze.
For up on the hill with the wind very still
came a sound that the whole county knows,
and it rung from my ears to my toes-
the whistling ghost, I suppose-
was Clancy, "My Wild Irish Rose!"

7. Great Neck Farewell
Music and Lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
Written for Julie a short time after her mother sold the family home in Great Neck, Long Island. The home was full of memories and had been the meeting place for family reunions through the years. Her room was almost the same as when she left it. I thought this song might help her with the closure of having to say goodbye.

I knew you as the days of summer slipped in through my open window
Dancing with the curtains ‘til they’d fall.
And waking to a gentle breeze as curtains calling reveille
through streaks of gold that play against the wall.

I found you as the quiet evening’s feast was gone and long forgotten,
savoring the taste of what I own.
With open arms that reach my soul although I’ve been so very far away,
I know the joy of coming home.

REFRAIN:
Save me as I pass between these walls
Safe within the comforts that I know.
Save me, for it’s more than I can hold
And now I seek the strength to let you go. (2X)

Save me as I pass between these walls
Safe within the comforts that I know.
Save me, for it’s more than I can hold
And now I seek the strength to turn away and let you go.

I thought of how the days of summer slipping through my open window
made the curtains dance until they fell.
But then I turned the key and locked the door that left the heart of winter
pounding in my chest and bid farewell.

8. Splash
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
My cruise to Bermuda became special when young Canadians helped me "start over" with their music and companionship.

Took off from an island of metal and stone
As Liberty stood in the harbor alone.
Whipped by the wind, chilled to the bone,
waving goodbye to our home.

This vessel is strong, it defines luxury,
and yet it's no match for the unsettled sea,
it's hard to be steady, on this we agree,
'til the blue water broke through the foam.

REFRAIN:
Island to island, grom granite to sand,
I consciously noticed the absence of land.
A call from Nevada, a walk on the strand,
and a homesick Canadian band.

Moored at the dock of Hamilton town,
Front Street is busy, tourists abound.
While shopping with Jo, it's a good beat to pound,
Moongates are had for a song.

Tha cove was engulfed in a tropical breeze,
granting us freedom to do as we please,
The limbo took many down to their knees,
as the rest of us cheered them along.

REFRAIN:
Island to island at work and at play,
keep track of your friends as you count off the days,
you won't feel at home 'til you've reached Thunder Bay
with a fist full of life in your hands.

In the wee hours of morning some drink 'til they fall,
they stagger the streets to make sense of it all.
A most dangerous place if you wait 'til last call
amis the oasis we found.

Went back to the island of concrete and steel
avoiding the bumps with this crew at the wheel.
Liberty welcomes us home as we hear
the foghorn repeat an old sound...ooh!

9. The Lane
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
A special place from my childhood... the old farm road where my borhters, sister and I played and grew up.

Roll down thet hill
frequently catching glances at an old familiar thrill.
Ride into the night,
why do we take such chances with abandon and delight?
What did we know? Just hold onto the grips and don't let go!

Walk close to me.
It's getting dark and I'm afraid of something I can't see.
Stay out very late.
Mama's calling and we are stalling, I think she'll have to wait.
What did she know? I guess she'll have to hold out 'til we grow.

Just as we pulled into the yard the sun was getting red,
If dad don't call before it sets, we'll turn around and head...

REFRAIN:
Down the lane.... where we are born again.
Down the lane.... where innocence remains.
We coast along this road without a chain.
And we were kings of all we saw and all we touched
in our domain.

Talk, talk to me.
Tell me all your problems in 1963.
Hear, hear the sound,
of twenty thousand crickets scattered all around,
what did they know?
The world will still be turning when they go.

Call into the dark.
In the distance comes an answer as a dog begins to bark.
Stay, by my side.
The hill is getting closer, and it's way too steep to ride.
What did we know?
We never failed to let our feelings show.

I could barely see as we got home and threw our bikes aside.
Now we must wait 'til morning for another chance to ride..

10. Hanging onto Every Word
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
About seeing a favorite singer/songwriter, Buddy Mondlock at Bodles Opera House with a friend on a cold night.

I'm hanging on to every word
of the sweetest sounds I've ever heard.
The candle throws a shadow long, 'so telling of what's right and wrong.
Time won't stnd still and I guess it never will
It's just a moment framed in a song.

We talked below that whispered tune
about colliseums, cats and ruins,
The money from your hand was torn
and yet another story's born.
There wasn['t much to say as it tooj our breaths away
and quickly as it came it was gone.

REFRAIN:
The north wind that's blowing hard down Main Street
through the cracks of these old windows and doors
is muffled by the sound of my own heartbeat,
in a place where it can't reach us anymore.

I can not read in this dim light,
the words upon your face tonight.
Please don't shake this small advance,
I may not take another chance.
Harmony was strong as we tried to sing along,
"Magnolia Street" invites us to the dance.

And even through a sad, sad tale
a constant smile will prevail.
You mentioned how the time had slid,
said "thanks" and left us with "The Kid."
With snow in her eye the wind blew a kiss goodnight
we could have asked for more, but never did.

I'm hanging onto every word your've said.

11. Friday... Next to the Sea
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
Julie and I spent a week with six friends on Long Beach Island, NJ as hurricane Isabel skirted the coast. (We love you guys!)

Friday... next to the sea
a few gentle souls shared a breath of their lifetime with me.
Four winds carried us down to the edge of the water
as the foam and our songs swirl around.

REFRAIN:
We saw Isabel dancing out there
She fling up her skirt as she passed very near.
And now we are thankful a moment of fear
is just part of a story we share...

The sculptor's hands were steady, the scholar's thoughts so clear
Impersonations made us laugh, and a mother's pride is here.
The artist saw the beauty in the actresses creation,
and one of us is the spirit here, and another... inspiration.

Friday... next to the sea
there was sand , there was salt in the air
there were friends near by me.
Four winds carried us down, where the moon rises slowly
and lights up the path we have found.

12. Knee Deep In Hay
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
I helped to organize the White Feather Folk Festival on a farm with friends from the Pine Bush Coffeehouse. (A great experience.)

As I stand all alone in this field
it's unusually warm for this part of May,
an old reservation began to yield,
the beauty has shown me the way
Walking in an early spring hay.

We are here side by side, tools in hand,
This old farm seems to think it's okay,
and relents to a dream on it's land,
an old farmer's tan for our pay,
Working in an open field of hay.

And the mountain hears the music, and the valley is gold,
a vision has surfaced as the story is told,
And now we are stronger as each song unfolds,
Playing in an open field of hay.

As I stand all alone in this field
just to recall what occurred on that day
An old reservation began to yield
some old friends have shown me the way
Knee deep in an open field of hay.

13. Rambler
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
A small sight-seeing train that runs through the Adirondack Mountains in NY. (Real Americana.)

Rambler's comin' 'round!
You can ride that train that we adore from Salem to Shushan.
Rambler's comin' 'round!
It's rolls along these sacred shores and makes this lonesome sound.
It goes "oooh, oooh, ooh!"

I'm standing in a dream
of picture postcard colors in a land that's so serene.
Busy days can fly,
but just a ride on this old Rambler takes you back to days gone by.

REFRAIN:
You can ride it once or twice a day or just watch it move along
through field of corn and sleepy towns it slowly makes it's way
and then it's gone!

Roll on, Baton Kill,
your children jump the covered bridge into the deep and still.
Rambler's by your side,
Now both of you can roll along as we enjoy the ride.

Rambler's comin' 'round!

14. An Unopened Gift
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
For Julie. I''m glad I opened my gift and discovered the beauty it held. I love you.

In the berath of the wind a snowflake is noticed
but a moment before it is tossed
and soon disappears as it reaches the ground,
far into white... lost.

The hand painted smile on the face of a clown
is removed at the end of each day,
revealing the truth the was hidden behind
the mask that he washes away.

REFRAIN:
There's much to be found in an unopened gift,
sealed in fine wrapping for show.
Left undisturbed, it's just paper and string
concealing hope 'neath it's bow.

Winters are long, 'though they lead to spring,
replaced by warmth, I ask.
So the clown at the circus can smile again
beneath his painted mask.

If I deny what is right here before me,
then a cynic's bounty I reap.
And the snowflake will melt on the face of that clown
like a tear he is destined to weep.

15. Take Me For What I Am
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
The "arguement song" and a credo for all couples.

Take me for what I am
Nothing more, nothing less
Part of me is part of you
Can you just accept the rest?

Some things remain the same
You are you and I am me
Should I love or should I change
All that I am asked to be?

REFRAIN:
A shade of brown, a shade of white,
A different trim you’ll see
Your willows blue and my strings are light
What do you ask of me (2X)

(Repeat from beginning)

Now I don’t claim that what you say
will either make me change or make me stay
For all I know is what we do is meant to be. (repeat)

Falling Star (Sarah’s lullaby) In Sarah’s memory
Music & lyrics by Ken DeAngelis
This song was written for a friend of mine who lost his young daughter to leukemia. I remembered one night as a child, watching a falling star with my mother. I asked her what it was, because it frightened me. She told me that a falling star represented a soul going to heaven. That when a person died, the soul became a star that fell through the sky into God's hands. I believed that story then as I do today.
In memory of Sarah who shines on us all now.

Falling, falling so far
Just one of many in the heavens, you are
Falling, falling so far
He who has made you recalls a falling star.

You didn’t shine for long
but you always shared your light
So beautiful! So bright!
Shoot across the sky and fall in his arms
Hold on! Hold on!

Onward and onward you speed through the night
If the man in the moon don’t stop looking,
He might catch you falling,

Falling so far.
Just one of many in the heavens you are
You are falling, falling so far,
He who has made you recalls a falling star.
